Last night, I went to Fox and Hound. Fox and Hound is a pub & grille located at 4158 Main at North Hills Street in Raleigh, NC. They offer common pub fare and have a full service bar. There are a number of large LCD and Projector televisions on each wall so you’re sure to catch your favorite game while eating or drinking.
Though Fox and Hound is a chain establishment, they were nice enough to sponsor Premier Co-Ed Sports’ dodgeball league, That gives them gives them “brownie points” in my book! Each Thursday after all of the games, fellow dodgeballers gather at the Fox and Hound for reasonably priced beer, good conversation, and even free food if enough people are in the group. With 7 at our dodgeball table, Fox and Hound provides free loaded nachos. With a party of 10, they offer ten free wings in addition to the nachos. I believe these deals only apply to our dodgeball league or on a case by case basis. At any rate, I think it’s quite generous of them!
When we arrived, we mentioned to the hostess that we were dodgeballers. She walked us past the very busy and very loud bar and into the equally croweded and loud dining room. While I’d rather be in a slightly quieter place, everyone seemed to be happy and having a great time. I figured that was probably a good sign. We put a couple of tables together and the eight of us who arrived first gathered around it. Each of us ordered the beer on special – Red Fox Amber Ale. $3.50 for a 23 ounce beer is more than reasonable for North Hills, and despite being an Anheuser-Bush product, the beer was very drinkable and reasonably satisfying. I checked BeerAdvocate and it seems that this beer is only available at Fox And Hound establishments.
Though it was busy, the server was very attentive and happy to help our table with whatever we needed. She asked each of us if we wanted another beer when the one we were drinking was about 1/4 full. This allowed her to hurry off and bring another to the table “just in the nick of time.” I have not seen service of this caliber and friendliness in a restaurant this packed in a very long time. Props to the waitress and to Fox and Hound for such exceptional service! I certainly look forward to more post-dodgeball parties at Fox and Hound!
I cannot speak for the quality of the food becuase I didn’t have much of it. Our table seemed to eat most of the free nachos, but I’m not sure if that is because they were there to pick at or people really enjoyed them. A few more players joined our table later, and that allowed us a free order of wings. I ate two of the barbecue wings and they were acceptable. Based on reviews from Yelp and Urban Spoon, people seem pretty mixed on their opinion of Fox and Hound food. At the time of this writing, Fox and Hound in North Hills has a 3 star rating on Yelp and 65% of patrons from Urban Spoon like it.
CONCLUSION: Fox and Hound in North Hills is definitely worth a visit if you tolerate mediocre chain restaurant food and enjoy excellent service.
